Your column today was just the encouragement I needed to recommend your writing to my sister and aunts. You’re right, we as people do like the opportunity that help.

Thanks Elizabeth, for your kind note and for recommending my writing to your sister and aunts. Both are very much appreciated. Hope they subscribe and find these notes of value. Have a wonderful week and enjoy the afterglow of helping :)

Very insightful column, Bob! I always like it when people ask new to help out; I view it as an opportunity to engage and indulge in Good Karma! So thanks for that.

Love this and how you worked your day-to-day personal experience into something so much bigger. So enlightening; so tied together. Thanks Bob!

It helps me to think about how I like helping others when I don't want to ask others to help me.

Thanks Linda. You raise an interesting paradox that I think many of us share.

Why is asking for help so hard? And why is accepting it often even harder?? Thank you for the reminder that both can be hard and neither should be! I hope to find a way to do my part in normalizing both.

HI Bob. I read your post most weeks and find them often something I directly relate to. I will say that your move to this platform is not a welcome change. As we all know, change, particularly at first, is objectionable or requires adjustments that we're annoyed to make. For me, your writing encourages more honesty, which we all know we need, and we also know that honesty without an awareness of our connectedness or responsibility for the other's well-being can do more harm than good, at least in the short term. Asking for assistance or help reveals that challenge. We all need help, we need each other to persevere through the changes that annoy us so we can connect with the deeper purpose of continuing to forge ahead, regardless of the petty pace. So I will endeavor to adjust to this new format, and I appreciate your work to help me through that transition. I really don't like all the additional emails I get now from substack..... I appreciate more, however, the chance to engage in this way with you.

Best,

Matt

Matt, thanks for your kind and considerate comments. Encouraging more honesty is at the heart of what I try to write here - albeit not always easy. Speaking of honesty, I appreciate your candor regarding the new platform. I did reach out to someone at substack, as I was unaware that anyone would be receiving any emails that didn't come directly from me. Here was her response. LMK if this helps eliminate the additional emails or feel free to email me separately and I can look into it further. From Substack: "It's hard to say what he is responding to without knowing specifically which emails he is talking about tbh. He may be getting email recommendations based on other Substacks he reads - these are all at the personal settings level, so it's something he can turn off or on in his settings. Here is an article that lets readers know how to change these settings: https://support.substack.com/hc/en-us/articles/8119385168660-How-do-I-stop-receiving-emails-from-Substack-."
